A charcoal burner rescuing the abducted Saxon Prince

Large-format preparatory drawing for the illustration of the failed abduction of the prince of Altenburg in 1455 in the “Allgemeine Weltgeschichte für Kinder” (General World History for Children) published by J.M. Schrökh (Leipzig, 1779-84). The Junker “Kunz von Kauffungen, who had abducted the Saxon prince, has dismounted from his horse and is picking some strawberries in his helmet to refresh the little prince, meanwhile he is discovered by a charcoal-burner drawn there by the barking of his dogs. Kauffungen’s companion, a horseman, seems to notice the discovery.” (Catalogue of the Berlin Academy Exhibition 1786, in: Kataloge der Berliner Akademie-Ausstellungen 1786-1850, edited by H. Börsch-Supan, vol. 1, Berlin 1971). – With some larger restored tears (especially in the upper half of the sheet). With (water) stains on the reverse, some minor faint brown stains on the front.
