Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn

Studies of the head of Saskia and others

Details

Bartsch 365; White/Boon 365; Hinterding/Rutgers (The New Hollstein) 157 I (from II).

Description

Excellent, clear and strong early impression with faintly visible scratches above the head in profile in the lower center and with the horizontal scratches between the woman with the turban and Saskia’s head as well as with the scratches in the upper right. The etched sketchbook sheets with individual figures and heads form a special feature in Rembrandt’s graphic oeuvre due to their fragmentary character and the different size ratios of the depictions. They give the impression of spontaneously executed sheets, but in fact they are carefully executed compositions that were created as etched “capricci”. The rare sheets, created as independent works of art, were (and are) very sought after on the market. – Due to a small defect, the upper right corner is backed with fine Japanese laid paper on the reverse. Two brown stains, a tiny hole in the paper on the upper right edge, otherwise a very fine impression.
