Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn

Young man in a velvet cap (Peter Sylvius?)

Details

Bartsch 268; White/Boon 268 II (from II); Hinterding/Rutgers (The New Hollstein) 164 II (from II).

Description

Excellent second state print, slightly dry in the lower right corner, with the delicate second outline at the top right of the cap and most of the dotted shading on the sitter’s left cheek removed. According to Hinterding, there is a print of this motif, also in a second state, in Lausanne, which, with an inscription on the reverse in brown pen from the 17th century, names Petrús Silviús (preacher and cousin of Rembrandt’s wife Saskia) as the sitter. However, the identification has not yet been clearly proven. Cut close to the edge of the plate. – With smoothed creases on the reverse. On the upper right edge there is a carefully closed tear and traces and remnants of a former mount, otherwise in good condition.
