John Cage war einer der führenden Avantgarde-Komponisten des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts, am bekanntesten vielleicht für sein stummes Werk “4:33” von 1952. Er war lebenslang mit bildender Kunst eng vertraut, begann aber erst mit Mitte sechzig selbst als bildender Künstler zu arbeiten. In den letzten 15 Jahren seines Lebens schuf Cage über 600 Druckgrafiken bei der Crown Point Press in San Francisco sowie 260 Zeichnungen und Aquarelle. Dabei wandte er die gleichen zufallsbestimmten Verfahren an, die ihn auch bei seinen musikalischen Kompositionen leiteten.
