Description

– Typical, clearly structured work from the important 1990s

– The Estate Günther Förg is exclusively represented by Galerie Hauser & Wirth

– Today, his works can be found in numerous international museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the San Francisco Museum of Art and the Städel, Frankfurt am Main.

In 1989, Günter Förg created “Rivoli” for a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Castello di Rivoli near Turin. It is a sequence of portrait-format paintings that organise and accentuate the architecture of the exhibition space. Each work is divided into two colour fields of different widths with precisely selected hues. This results in a double rhythm that changes the overall exhibition space. This is precisely Förg’s intention, as throughout his life he has been interested in raising awareness of spatial and surface relationships.

This is also the case in this work from 1995 in which a narrow terracotta-coloured strip of paint is juxtaposed with a colour field in a dark sand tone. The visible brushstrokes, layers of paint and transparent passages allow the colours to vibrate and reveal the painting process. This processual creativity, the dominance of the act of painting over the conceptual construction, is what makes Günter Förg’s works so appealing.
