Descrizione

Genre paintings predominate among the non-religious subjects in Zick’s oeuvre. He took up this theme of a dance in front of a tavern several times in the 1750s, including a version very similar to the present painting that is housed in the Stuttgart State Gallery (inv. no. 1479). In the tavern, people play music, drink heavily and dance exuberantly. Zick probably received suggestions from his father. He not only created narrative depictions such as “The Italian Inn” himself, but also introduced his son to Dutch engravings. Some of Zick’s paintings are influenced by David Teniers the Younger, but also by Adriaen van Ostade and Adriaen Brouwer.
