Descrizione
A superb, strong and in all details fine early impression of the rare first state with fully visible, in places roughly drawn platemark. With the faint horizontal lines above the right foot. One of the artist’s most charming sheets from the Leiden period around 1630. Prints of this image are extremely rare, the plate was lost early. Labelled “R -” for “rare” and the remark “an uncommon ugly portrait” in Nowell-Usticke. More recent Rembrandt research considers a self-portrait of the artist. With a margin up to 7 mm wide around the platemark. – Minor, carefully repaired paper defects in the margin, otherwise in very good condition.
