Descrizione
Excellent, deep black and slightly velvety impression, with some plate tone in the star and with the diagonal lines in the hat of the child holding the star.
This Engraving, an exemplary depiction of darkness, shows a small street scene during an Epiphany procession in Amsterdam. On 6 January, to celebrate the Adoration of the Magi, children and adults paraded through the city at night in small groups, singing and collecting small gifts. As is so often the case, Rembrandt does not “depict” the scene, but lets us experience it for ourselves, as if we were part of this nocturnal procession. With a fine margin around the platemark. – A slight thinning of the paper at the centre of the upper edge verso and remnants and traces of former mounting in the corner verso, otherwise in good condition.
